The settlers have reportedly attacked a meditation centre run by Triratna Bhikkhu Association in Belaichari under Rangamati district.

The incident took place in the morning today, Saturday, sources said, adding that the settlers also ransacked and looted a Jumma house.

According to sources, a section of the Bengali settlers fanned communal tension following the death of Shah Alam by unknown attackers in Harinchara on Friday.

In protest at the killing, they blocked waterways, which is the only means of communication with Belaichari Upazila headquarters, since morning today and vandalized two Kaptai-bound engine-propelled boats.

At about 8am the unruly settlers carried out an attack on Kilachari Bidarshan Bhabona Kendra, a Buddhist meditation centre. They entered the house and caused damage to properties.

Ven. Sumona Nanda Bhikkhu is in charge of the meditation centre.

The sources further said that the settlers also attacked the house of Binoy Chakma in the village of Kilachari.

They smashed the bamboo fence around his house and looted away an 80 watts solar battery, 200 aris (2000 kgs) of unhusked rice, and 20 kgs of rice from him.

Panic gripped Jumma populated areas in the Upazila following the attack. The Belaichari Upazila chairman and UNO visited the spot.

However, so far no action has been taken against the attackers.
